Podruzhki Balkan
Women's Choir
~
Podruzhki means
Girlfriends in Russian ~

We are a small women's choir with
about 15 singers.
We started singing together in 2000.
We garner much enjoyment by gathering together to
learn and sing women's choral folk music from Eastern Europe.
We concentrate on music from Bulgaria,
because of the wild rhythms
and beautifully rich non-Western harmonies.
We learn the old fashioned peasant songs
from an earlier generation and another time;
the words speak of courtship, hard work, ancient battles,
and the good things in life.
Most of our songs are sung "a capella".

Performing at the Nevada County
Fairgrounds Farmer's Market ~ September 3, 2005

"How I'd like to have a shop in the
town of Struga, mother,
To sit on the steps, and watch the
girls,
When they go to fetch water, with
their colorful jugs.
To that cold spring
well, there to meet their girlfriends."
(Shto Mi E Milo, Macedonian)
